More Common Sense

I think thinking has gone out of style.

It seems to be the fashion not to think. Although in order to get some thoughts (and thus be an interesting person) people do pick up the thoughts of others, and then spout them as if they were their own, whether or not they make sense.

And some of the people are so far gone, they don't even know that they aren't thinking. They think --so to speak--that by getting all emotional and angry over things, that that really shows they've put a lot of thought into what they believe.

What do you think?

  1. I agree completely. People don't learn how to think anymore, they just learn facts. Chesterton complained about the disappearance of a traditional liberal education, partly for that reason, didn't he? I think Chesterton also make the point that if you remove religion from education, you take away the context of everything. It's hard to have a train of thought without a context.

  2. Nancy,

In most cases I would agree, but have you been to a coffee shop next to a college campus? Emotivism at its finest can also be found at the local college campus -- usually at the same table by the people who think they are thinking.

I'm from the school of thought that every student should be required to take 2 logic classes while in college, so that they can at least know the bases of how arguments and ideas work.
