OMG! He's thin! :-o
ReplyDeleteHe looks young. I've seen pictures of him with that moustache, and without the glasses. I would say early 20's?
ReplyDeleteHis hair is already starting to grey, and now I also remember what Gier said at the conference last year about how Chesterton was actually thinner than most people realize, and that his girth was caused by gout.
ReplyDeleteWe should e-mail him and let him know about this picture.
I've seen this picture once before: on Chesterton's author page at LibraryThing. Since it is also cited as coming from the Library of Congress, this doesn't help us determine anything interesting about the photo's provenance.
ReplyDeleteIs that a rosary hanging around the wall picture?
Heb, yes it is. Good eye! I didn't even see it.
ReplyDeleteNice blog, btw. I'll give it a plug in the next issue's Trifles section.
The picture, which is of GK and Belloc first meeting, is in a biography of Belloc by A Wilson. The photo extends to show Gilbert wearing knickerbockers.
