Have You Heard About Mozart?

I can't help wondering lately, what a public reading of Lepanto might stir up.

And then I wonder, what would a public reading of The Ballad of the White Horse stir up? Would all of the Sons of Viking Raiders come out of the woodwork, and claim that they were not being depicted fairly? Would heirs of the Norsemen cry out for vengeance? Would there be any violence? Would King Alfred be re-written in the history books as a war-mongering interfering dictator?

  1. This isn't about Mozart. This is about an addition which the producer made: the severed heads of Mohammed, Jesus, Buddha, and Poseidon. In other words, God is Dead. If any confirmation were necessary, I've read that it was specifically intended as an attack on all religion, in which case its a good thing if it ends up staying cancelled (though of course the reason, fear of Muslim violence, isn't good). It's amazing to me that so many are coming to the defense of a opera they might otherwise be protesting.

  2. But the addition of the "God is dead" stuff is not what the protest is about. It's about fear that one segment, one historically violent segment, might be offended. And I don't mean Christians, Buddists or Poseidonites.

Though what you are saying is true, and we should ALL be offended. Still, it's interesting that no one fears the Christians, Buddists or Poseidonites because they would send their suicide bombers upon us, do they?

No one fears them because, as Mark Shea is fond of pointing out, only Muslims issue fatwas.
