Item to Note in Gilbert

One of the more interesting items in the latest Gilbert is the drawing on the cover, an original Chesterton drawing for sale. If I had that kind of spare change (only about $3900--and it may be sold already, I'm not sure) I'd be the proud owner of a Chesterton relic...a...ahem!....piece of personal memorabilia. Did I mention the investment potential?

  1. It was sold almost as soon as the issue rolled off the presses.

Of more interest to me is the book being offered by the ACS, Chesterton as Seen by His Contemporaries by Cyril Clemens.

  2. Yes, I actually own that book, bought it on an e-bay auction. It IS a very interesting volume, and I recommend it.

  3. For those of us without the issue, could you describe what the picture was?

  4. It was an original Chesterton color chalk drawing, signed by Chesterton. It is sort of a characature, showing a bunch of gleeful Irishmen beating a mournful W.B. Yeats with shillelaghs (Irish clubs) while they dance around him. The caption, hand-written by Chesterton, reads, "Mr. W.B. Yeats, murdered for still looking sad on the day of Irish Independence"

William Butler Yeats was known to be a somewhat less-than-cheery fellow. He and Chesterton lived in the same art colony, Bedford Park, in the early 1900s and knew each other. This is Chesterton's way of poking fun at Yeats for, apparently, looking sad on the day of Irish independence.

  7. Are you talking abouit the book or the drawing? Hey, if I had a spare $3900, I'd have snatched the drawing up in a heartbeat.

I fully intend to BUY a copy of the book. Dale was supposed to bring me one when we got together for our meeting, but forgot. So he'll be holding one for me for when I come up to the conference. :-)

  8. I shall see this picture, someday. Until then, just imagining it is enough. Thanks.
