Holy Thursday

And I've just discovered that the Conference Registration is UP! (I've just registered on line and its EASY.) You can print it out and mail it in, or you can sign up on-line, but may I suggest you do it soon, as this conference is growing, and will fill quickly. The line up of speakers looks so intriguing and exciting! Chesterton and Da Vinci Code! Chesterton and Lewis! Chesterton and CSI! Dickens and Darwin!

And here's the best part:
IT'S FREE. That's right, still free. This may be the last year, so plan to come this year.
Oh, and donations accepted, of course.
Or, spend your money at the ACS table buying all the books your suitcase can hold. Loome comes each year, too, with special books, Chesterton-signed First Editions, etc.

Plan to come! June 15-17, University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN

Why would this be the last year of the ACS conference?

  3. Why was my comment posted multiple times again?

Do you mean that this may be the last year of the ACS conference, or that this is the last year the ACS conference is free?

  4. She meant that this may be the last year it is free. But that is at best a guess as the decision on that is up to Dale Ahlquist, and so far as I know he hasn't even hinted that he may begin charging next year.

  5. Yes, Chris, Chestertonian is right, sorry to scare you. (And if you have a slow connection and think your comment hasn't taken, and press the "Login and Publish" button more than once, that accounts for the multiple comments. However, there is a little trash can thing in the lower left corner of your post, and you are able to delete your own extraneous comments, if you choose to do so.)

It has been suggested that the ACS charge for the conference, even though it is a long standing tradition not to, there is a practical aspect to it: it costs money to run, and there are speakers who should have honorariums, etc. So, even my own personal opinion, despite the fact that I'm glad that currently the conference is free, is that it would be wise to move towards a fee, even if nominal, like $50 or $100.
Most conferences of this caliber cost a little something to attend.
And as far as the ACS conferences, go, I think they will go on forever.

  6. I want to go in the worst way (or the best way, if we must be precise), but I am not going to be able to make it. Both money and time have conspired against me. I shall do my best to make it out next year, however, to take my stout and beef with the rest of you.

  7. Furor,
We will miss you. But we'll raise a glass and drink in your honor, and pray you will make the journey in 2007 (when you may get the joy of hearing moi speak, if no one cancels out this year--I'm a back-up speaker this year.) and it will be worth the trip (Ok, you probably want to meet Dale, too, I suppose, that's fine.)

Get your Gilbert subscription started, so that you can get the report of the conference, usually published in a few months after the event, with pictures.

  8. I am a bit of a rookie Chestertonian and have the unfortunate distinction of not yet attending an ACS conference.

I did buy some tapes from last year's conference (Fr. Schall's "Chesterton: The Real Heretic" is highly recommended and I have listened several times) which only increased my desire to actually be there. It is easy to hear the joy of the conference come through on the tapes.

Once again, I won't be able to make this year's conference, but I am looking forwrrd to listening in with the tapes the ACS makes available.

  10. I really must get on track with this subscription. Probably get one to the Chesterton Review, as well. Maybe this will be an early birthday present to myself this year, which would be breaking so many conventions it's not even funny. Alas.

Thank you, Nancy, for raising a glass for me. Perhaps I could write something brief for you or someone else to read on such occasion as the floor is thrown open to flamboyant commentary.

  11. Oh yes, furor, please do. Saturday night of the conference is a dinner with traditional toasts and jokes, clerihews and etc. Your comments could be read then, and would be appreciated. Especially if you can put in a good word about how wonderful the blog is. :-D
