Naming Things After Chesterton

Phil in the combox tells us that he just named his new puppy "Chesterton" and we were talking earlier about Chesterton's dog being named after a character in Pickwick Papers, a Mr. Winkle.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has a pet named after Chesteton or one of his characters? Someone earlier also mentioned that they had named a son Something Chesterton Smith. Has anyone else named children after Chesterton?

  1. I named my son (now 2 yrs. old) "Chet".

Being that Chesterton was such a monumental figure in my intellectual and spiritual awakening, I wanted to name my son after him. I thought Chesterton was odd for a first name and I couldn't bring myself to name my son Chester. My wife and I settled on Chet Francis--which is funny because only later did it dawn on me that Frances was the name of the writer's wife. We were naming our Chet after St. Francis of Assisi.

Before Chet was born we named one of our cats Gilbert. The other, his brother, is called Clive.

  2. Wonderful! I'd love to meet this Chestertonian family. Are you guys coming to the conference in June?

  3. I've wanted to come to the conferences, but didn't think it would be a good time for the family. (We have three kids: 9, 6, and 2.) But you are tempting me. :-) We'll come some year, I'm sure.

  4. Well, we have found the Mall of America and Camp Snoopy to be a very good diversion for the younger set...and it's very close by. Keep that in mind....hope to see you when the time is right!

  5. Naming things after Chesterton is ok, but I think it's the height of cheek to give yourself a Chestertonian online persona.
